TEAM-WORKS Students Grow in Respecting Themselves, Family, Culture and Community

Currently, the Mack Strong TEAM-WORKS Foundation serves over 300 students per year in various in-school, after-school, and summer youth mentoring programs. So far in this 2012-13 academic school year, we have 108 students in our intensive in-school and after-school academies where students are committed to receiving mentoring with our three-part curriculum for nine months.

While walking the halls at our partner schools or during our after-school programs, the TEAM-WORKS staff is constantly shocked at the disrespect they witness between students. Because many of our TEAM-WORKS students do not fit the “norms” of our society, they are inundated with disrespectful comments and treatment. And, like most young people, they tend to treat others how they are treated.

As part of our three-part mentoring curriculum addressing academics, physical health and character development, these past two months have been focused extensively on teaching the value of respect. And, in just a short amount of time, we have seen dramatic changes in our students! We are so proud of our TEAM-WORKS students for embracing these lessons and activities to become respectful young men and women above and beyond the schoolwork tutoring they receive.

Here are just a few stories from our TEAM-WORKS mentors:

“Recently, in a lesson on respecting family, we broke into discussion groups to talk about ways that we disrespect and respect our family members. When asked how he disrespects his family, one boy stated, ‘I don’t anymore. I used to. You guys have helped me. Now, when I get mad at my mom or my brother, I just go to my room to think about it and cool down so when I’m ready to come back it’s like it never happened. I can be respectful all the time.’” – Nikki, TEAM-WORKS mentor

“A 5th grade student in our program began the year as a big-time jokester and was quite unfocused. Through the weeks of participating in group discussions about respect, he has become one of the better contributors. During one discussion, he opened up about having been made fun of in the past for his family’s economic status and how talking about respect has helped him think about how to treat others who are now in that same situation. During this conversation he said, ‘I remember feeling really disrespected by kids at school just because we had to live with my aunt for a while, but now we have our own house. I know a lot of kids who are in that same situation, so I really try to be nice to them.’ This student has been an example of tangible change as he has really internalized the value of respect.” – Michael, TEAM-WORKS mentor

“I want to share about a 5th grader that I am very proud of. He is not a kid who loves sports, so right away he is different than most of the kids in our TEAM-WORKS after-school program. The thing that sticks out about him the most is how much he loves his family. He told us last week that his parents were having a child and he was going to become a brother. He also shared about the struggles that they are going through. He is always enthusiastic to answer questions during our character lessons. I see him getting picked on a lot by other kids, but he pushes through and remains true to himself. This is just one student out of many who has impacted my life.” – Aaron, TEAM-WORKS mentor

TEAM-WORKS Summer Programs Serve over 240 Youth throughout the Northwest

The Mack Strong TEAM-WORKS Foundation closes out the 2012 summer having served 240 students throughout the Northwest – reaching the inner city of Seattle and South Puget Sound region to more remote locations like the Skokomish tribal community in Shelton, Washington and the Nez Perce tribal community in Lapwai, Idaho. Our summer programs included: TEAM-WORKS Summer Academy, TEAM-WORKS Sports, Leadership and Culture Camp, and the Native AC2A Workshop. All four TEAM-WORKS Youth Development Programs were aimed at inspiring underserved youth from indigenous, minority and low-income areas to build strong minds, strong bodies, and strong characters, and so gain the tools and vision necessary to build a successful future.

In partnership with HOPE worldwide and AmeriCorps volunteers, the TEAM-WORKS Summer Academy served 30 elementary aged students at the Seattle Rotary Boys and Girls Club from mid-June until mid-August helping them to develop a trustworthy character, respect for themselves and others, and to gain tools for overcoming life challenges and making healthy decisions. Program Director, Brian Potoshnik remarked on the how over the course of the summer the students “came out of their shells becoming more vulnerable about challenges they were facing which allowed them an opportunity grow in their ability to respond in a health way.”

In addition, two TEAM-WORKS Sports, Leadership, and Culture Camps were held in partnership with three tribal communities. The Nez Perce camp in Lapwai, Idaho was attended by over 140 native youth, 11 volunteer professional and collegiate athletes, and over 40 community volunteers. The second camp, held in Shelton to support the Skokomish and Squaxin Island tribes, served over 60 youth and was served by eight volunteer professional and collegiate athletes and 20 community volunteers. A number of the camp youth were talented athletes and showed strong leadership qualities in their community with an eagerness to work hard. During one of the camps, Mack had the opportunity to engage in a character building conversation on dealing with frustration and anger without quitting or letting your team down with one of the young boys displaying obvious emotional needs. Despite the challenges he was struggling with, the young boy displayed a remarkable turn-around finishing the camp with a great attitude. At the close of the program, the boy wrote Mack a thank you note to which Mack remarked, “I will never forget this young man.”

Closing out the summer, TEAM-WORKS hosted a Native AC2A Workshop at the Southwest Seattle Boys and Girls Club inspiring a dozen incoming Native freshman and sophomore students from Seattle, Tacoma, Bellevue, Kent and Auburn to establish a positive Attitude, make a personal Commitment to school and their community, and to set goals for Academic Achievement enhancing their dreams for success in the future. TEAM-WORKS staff partnered with six Native leaders and community educators along with five HOPE worldwide and AmeriCorps volunteers. After the workshop, one teenage boy commented that, “They made me understand why my education was important.” Many of the students concluded the workshop by making personal commitments to their future. One of the teenage girls made a commitment to “study hard, take advice, ask for help, listen, and have the motivation to face it [education] head on,” while another girl committed to not giving up.

The Mack Strong TEAM-WORKS foundation wants to thank all of our sponsors, supporters and partners for allowing us to serve 240 amazing students at no costs to their families. We also want to thank all the students who were willing to invest a portion of their summer with TEAM-WORKS to furthering their education, athletic ability and overall well-being. We are proud of you!

2012 Tournament Update

Dear Sponsors, Participants and Volunteers,

On behalf of the Mack Strong TEAM-WORKS Foundation, we thank you for joining us at our 2012 Charity Golf Tournament and Auction. Your participation enabled us to raise over $93,000, our largest fundraiser effort to date.

These funds will allow the foundation to expand the TEAM-WORKS Academy in-school program to a new site in the Highline School District this fall helping at-risk youth develop skills and knowledge needed to enjoy healthy, prosperous lives. Many of the students who attended our in-school programs last year showed significant decreases in behavioral referrals and increased grades. Even more so, were the student expressions of gratitude for having gained positive life skills that increased their confidence in school and relationships. This year’s tournament success will also allow us to provide three culturally-supportive leadership camps this summer for Native youth throughout the Northwest. These camps are vital in intervening with students whose culture is drastically different than the traditional school system. Thanks to your support, we are able to expand our programs reaching the unique needs of more students.

Finally, we thank our key partner HOPE worldwide under the leadership of Erica Richey as the organizing lead of our annual golf tournaments these past five years, and for providing valuable volunteers for all our programs. Over 10-years ago, TEAM-WORKS began as a small organization, and our partnership with HOPE worldwide has allowed us to serve hundreds of children providing sustainable programs during challenging economic times. As the Mack Strong TEAM-WORKS Foundation has grown, we will now take lead on our annual golf tournament fundraiser while retaining our partnership with HOPE worldwide.

Thank you,

Mack Strong & Zoe Higheagle Strong
